The NICU

Henry is still in the NICU at St. Lukes. We finally got an explanation as to what is going on with him. He was sent to the NICU the night he was born because he was unable to keep his temperature up which signaled a sign of infection and his blood platelet count was lower than average. Its first important to note that his condition is not life threatening - or lets just say the neonatologist will not allow it to become life threatening. When he arrived in the NICU he developed jaundice so he was put under the photo therapy lights.





His jaundice has gone away, and although it can come back, the Dr. says the chance is not great but it is still a possibility. As for his body temperature, he is maintaining it and is in a regular crib! We are working on the breastfeeding thing and so far I think he has it down, its me maneuvering him that is causing the issue. He eats really well when he is latched on correctly but it takes a nurse to help us before that happens so it's a little frustrating but because he has eaten so well, he was taken off of IV fluids so that is another success we have had.






As for his platelets, Henry has been diagnosed with thrombocytopenia - meaning his platelets are low (who knew there was a name for this). It turns out, I have given this to him and the explanation is too long but the good news is, there are a few things we can do should it not correct itself so everyone is very hopeful. So far we are letting his body try to correct the situation and his platelet count is elevated over when he was born but it continues to fluctuate. He is still on antibiotics for good measure and we hope this week brings good results!
